Infinitive without to

 

1. why (not) + infinitive without to
Why pay more at other shops?  We have the lowest prices in town.
(왜 다른가게에서 더 비싸게 주고 사세요? 우리가게는 시내에서 가장 싸게 파는데요.)
Why stand up if you can sit down?  Why sit down if you can lie down?
(앉아 있어도 되는데 왜 일어서는가?  드러누워 있어도 되는데 왜 앉아 있는가?)
Why not let me lend you some money?
(내가 돈을 좀 빌려주면 어떻겠니?)
Why not take a holiday?
(쉬는것이 어떻겠어?) 
 
2. 두번째 부정사에는 종종 to가 쓰이지 않는다.
We had nothing to do except (to) look at the posters outside the cinemas.
(우리는 극장 밖에 붙여진 포스터를 보는것 이외에는 할 일이 없었다.) 
 
3. do동사
do의 정확한 뜻을 설명하는 절은 to없는 부정사를 취할 수 있다.

All I did was (to) give him a little push.
(내가 한 것은 그를 좀 떠밀었던 것 뿐이다) 
What a fire-door does is (to) delay the spread of a fire long enough for people to get out.
(방화문의 역할은 사람들이 충분한 시간을 갖고 빠져나갈 수 있도록 불이 번지는 것을 지연시키는 것이다.)
